Log Splitter Maintenance

Whether you use your log splitter only on weekends to produce the family firewood or on a daily basis as part of your job, it is important to properly maintain and care for your wood splitter.

A hydraulic log splitter is actually a fairly simple piece of machinery that is easy to maintain. The log splitter operates on the power of a small engine attached to a pump which pressurizes oil. The pressure of the oil is what actually splits the logs. As with any other piece of machinery that has an engine and an oil tank, fluids need to be occasionally changed and parts kept clean. It's all a part of your log splitter maintenance checklist.

With proper maintenance your log splitter will always be in perfect condition and ready for use. Purchasing your log splitter was most likely a costly investment. It is well worth the effort to take those extra few moments to keep your equipment in optimum shape.

Care and Maintenance Tips for Your Log Splitter

Storage:

Before storing, your log splitter should always be cleaned off and polished. Never leave it covered with wood chips or debris. If saplings or green wood has been split, sap can accumulate on the main support beam and wedge. All residue and sap should be removed to prevent the metal from rusting. Mineral spirits or automotive polish can be used to easily dissolve and remove sap.

When storing your log splitter make sure the bleed valve is open. This will prevent loss of hydraulic fluid due to pressure placed on the seals when not in use.

The operating pumps or levers should be fully retracted. This prevents the small hydraulic pump pistons from being exposed and rusting during storage. This is an important precaution; if the surface of the pistons becomes rough the rubber seals and gaskets will easily become worn down.

Hydraulic Unit Maintenance:

In order for your log splitter to run properly, the hydraulic cylinder must be bled of air whenever hydraulic fluid is added. Air in the system will cause a notable lack of power. Always keep the hydraulic fluid at proper levels (3/4 full).

Bleeding the Cylinder:

Bleeding cylinder involves a few simple steps. First, extend the piston rod to its maximum length. Remove the oil plug in and turn the release screw counterclockwise as quickly as possible. By doing so, because piston rod will retract into the cylinder, pushing the unwanted air out through the oil filling hole. Now, replace the oil filling plug and you are finished.

Before Operating Your Log Splitter:

Always check for loose nuts, bolts and screws before operating any log splitters. Vibrations from normal use can cause hardware to loosen. You'll want to make sure every part is secure before turning on the machine.

Additional Precautions:

Before performing any routine maintenance or repair work on your log splitter, remember to remove the spark plugs.

Check the hydraulic and engine oil levels before each use.

By following these simple tips, you will prolong the life of your log splitter and it will always be ready when you need it.
