Electric log splitters are good for their size, portability and price. The price of electricity is often less than that of other fuel types and the price of the log splitter itself is quite competitive with any gas or diesel powered log splitter.
Why buy an electric log splitter?
An electric log splitter is perfect if you’re planning to use it around the house or in a small shop. Electric log splitters are good to the environment compared to hydraulic log splitters that normally run on gas or diesel. One of the biggest advantages to owning an electric log splitter is the fact that it is generally portable while they do weigh over 100 pounds so you might not want to move it too often.
Electric splitters run off of a small electric engine that can plug into any normal wall outlet. These electric engines are powerful and can split almost any log required for residential use. Don’t be fooled by the electric engine because it can be just as loud as a gas powered engine when it is producing 4 to 12 tons of pressure on the log you’re trying to split!
During the height of the $4 gas prices, electric log splitters were quite popular – and they continue to be a preferred tool for splitting wood because electricity is still less expensive than most other fuel for a majority of the population. The electricity used by one of these log splitters might only add a few dollars to your bill each month if you aggressively use the splitter. That will probably save you hundreds of dollars each year. Keep in mind that these log splitters are ideal for softer woods and light daily use. If you plan on splitting wood for more than 15m a day or 8 hours a day for a few days straight, then you might want to get a hydraulic log splitter for the speed and durability they provide.
While the overall power is normally less than a gas or diesel powered hydraulic log splitter, electricity provides a consistent power supply so you never have to refuel or slow down because you’re running low on gas or diesel. This can be appealing to the regular user that only needs a few logs split every day to keep the wood stove going at night.
Electric log splitters are convenient because they are usually small and can fit next to your wood pile, hearth, wood stove or fireplace. You could even hide the splitter behind a decent looking firewood rack.
Here are a few things you should consider before purchasing an electric log splitter:
1. Do you have an extension cord or a regular power outlet near your log or wood pile?
2. Is electricity less expensive than fuel in your region?
3. Do you have a backup set of axes or another way to split your logs if the electricity goes out?
