What kind of a log splitter are you looking for?
Hydraulic Log Splitter
A hydraulic wood splitter usually has more power, faster splitting times and a bigger splitting area than electric and manual log splitters.
You can buy a small hydraulic log splitter if you want one that is easy to take with you wherever you go. Some people buy small gas or diesel powered or manual wood splitters for camping trips, outdoor adventures or to simply share with friends and family members.
Quick Tip: A log splitter can be vertical or horizontal. A horizontal log splitter might be more convenient if you’re splitting hundreds of logs every year. Vertical log splitters are good for heavier logs that you might not be able to lift by yourself. There are log splitters available that can quickly and easily switch from being a horizontal log splitter to being a vertical log splitter.
Electric Log Splitter
Electric log splitters have been gaining in popularity because they can be used indoors. They are still loud and powerful, but they can be conveniently stored next to your wood pile for quick and easy splitting when you’re in a hurry to get some wood for the fire.
Electric splitters are normally quite portable around a house or small yard. They are easier to move than most gas powered splitters.
Quick Tip: Tonnage (or ‘tons’) is the amount of force applied to the log. Most soft woods (like pine) and even some hard woods (like oak) can split at 4 to 10 tons of pressure. If you are splitting hard wood regularly or you have a lot of wood to split, then you might want to consider a splitter that has more than 10 tons of splitting force because they are generally faster at splitting logs.
Manual Log Splitter
Manual wood splitters are usually light weight compared to the electric or gas log splitter. This makes them ideal for traveling or letting a neighbor borrow it. These splitters require some exercise which is probably a good thing for most people these days. If you need that extra work out every day, then a manual log splitter might be right for you.
Quick Tip: Almost every log splitter has some kind of hydraulic system on it. A “hydraulic log splitter” can be gas, diesel, electric, manual or air compressor powered.

You can always stick to using the axe or maul to split your logs – and you can call yourself a log splitter. You are probably tired of doing that back breaking work for any length of time.
